DJ Fast is an accomplished, versatile DJ. He cut his teeth by mixing hip hop on vinyl in New York and expanded his range to include all genres. As founding member of Fun Lovin’ Criminals he received a great deal of commercial success but always makes time for his love of DJing. Rare grooves, funk, soul, hip hop and house are all styles you can expect to hear at one of DJ Fast’s sets.
Is there a story behind your DJ name?
Just a nickname from my younger days that stuck!
How would you describe your musical style?
Multi genre party tunes, classics and breaks.
What is your current favourite DJ performance equipment?
Pioneer CDJ/DJM and Technics 1200s.
What got you into DJing?
Love for all genres of music and getting people moving on the dancefloor.
Which well-known DJs’ style do you most reflect?
Mark Ronson, DJ AM (rip), Jazzy Jeff and Mr Thing
Tell us about your all-time favourite artist
It’s hard to make a short list but my favourite producers are Prince, Quincy Jones, Pharrell, DJ Premier, Donae’o and Diztortion.
What do you remember about your first ever gig?
It was a birthday party sometime in the late 80s and I played 7″ vinyls all night long.
What was your best ever gig and why?
DJing in Moscow at a hip hop club. The crowd were really into it and love all the classic 90s hip hop.
What has been your most ridiculous DJ request to date?
Someone asked for The Bee Gee’s – Staying Alive at Notting Hill Carnival.
What has been your worst gig and what happened?
There’s been quite a few when the equipment doesn’t work properly.
What one useful tip would you give to anyone looking to book a DJ for their event?
Ask for live mixtapes and listen carefully to the blends between songs.
What is your definition of a DJ in 2019?
A great DJ plays a balance of what the crowd wants, and what they don’t know they want!
