An interview with: Vicky Vanna

Vicky Vanna truly defines ‘international DJ’. Having spent time in many different countries, Vicky’s lively sets have entertained dancefloors around the world. Here she gives us an insight to her DJing lifestyle.

Is there a story behind your DJ name?

While I was living in New York my friend said my real name (Victoria Hainsworth) was too serious. Vicky Vanna was suggested and that’s how it all began!

How would you describe your musical style?

Funky and soulful, spiced with urban and latin grooves. However, I am open-format and play whatever styles suits the venue/theme.

What is your current favourite DJ performance equipment?

2 x Pioneer CDJ2000s with newest Nexus mixer

What got you into DJing?

When I worked as a holiday entertainer in Ibiza I ran the music during the show and then eventually after the show at the hotel nightclub. I then returned to Australia and started my own successful DJ business.

Which well-known DJs’ style do you most reflect?

I’m a huge fan of Roger Sanchez and Black Coffee but I really have my own unique style!

Tell us about your all-time favourite artist

I don’t have one specific favourite but appreciate real icons like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tupac and so many more.

What do you remember about your first ever gig?

I was very nervous but felt so lucky and proud to be able to entertain the crowd

What was your best ever gig and why?

My entire residency at Pure Lounge in Doha on the rooftop, but I love playing all over the world

What has been your most ridiculous DJ request to date?

I was asked to play Serbian and Macedonian music at a wedding which caused a bit of conflict!

What has been your worst gig and what happened?

It’s only when the equipment stops working, but i’ve always got back-ups to be prepared.

What one useful tip would you give to anyone looking to book a DJ for their event?

Don’t just listen to mixes – check for videos and event photos. Also, if you want a specific style of music then make sure you give the DJ enough time to prepare.

What is your definition of a DJ in 2019?

Artist, performer, crowd reader.
