Deeper Melodic House

Current Favourite DJ Performance Equipment
Still love my Pioneer DDJ-T1 because of its perfect Traktor compatibility. Also like my Traktor Kontrol F1, X1.

What got you into DJing?
After my first clubbing trips growing up in Belgium, taking me to places like Fuse in 1996. I fell in love with the underground scene and loved the concept of building a set and creating a unique and continuous sound for a crowd. I think I had a go on my friend’s 1210s way back in 1995.

Which big name DJs’ style do you most reflect?
When I first started out in the late 90s it was all classified as progressive house, pushing a Sasha & Digweed sound, and today it is more of a Joris Voorn meets Claude Vonstroke deep/tech/melodic sound.

Do you remember your first ever gig?
I think it was in one of Nottingham University’s campus bars back in 1998. It was £1 a pint back then.

Tell us about your all-time favourite artists.
Some consistent amazing ones: GusGus, Alt-J, Sasha, Joris Voorn, Thievery Corporation…

What has been your most ridiculous DJ request to date?
A more recent concept has come up whereby punters come up and show me some obscure 1985 Afghan track (for example) playing on their phone, shouting ‘play this now’.

How do you think DJ technology will change into the future?
As technology continues to get more advanced and more complex, punters should expect more live production rather than bog-standard 2-deck mixing.

What was your worst gig and why?
Playing at an private event where a drunken punter decided he would take it upon himself to unplug all the DJ gear mid-set because I wasn’t playing any French music… The crowd all looked at me as if I was the one to blame for the lack of sound. Luckily he was shown the door and the rest of the crowd continued dancing until the end of the night!

What was your best ever gig and why?
When I played at the Epsom Derby a couple of years back. I turned up to play a relaxed gig with DRASL and in about an hour the venue which was essentially full as far as the eye could see. Always the unexpected ones which are superb.

Do you think we will see DJ robots soon?
I have a feeling this type of thing probably already exists in Japan, and I’m sure it will be trialled. Realistically Spotify is a DJ robot with no mixing ability.

Do any ‘star’ DJs get on your nerves?
Of course. The producers who become way too diva-ish about their life and needs following the success of a pop-production.

Your best ever YouTube clip
Boots and Cats… speaks for itself
