Ray Keith

Ray Keith is one of drum ‘n’ bass‘ most well known producers and DJs, regarded as a pioneer of the early jungle / drum ‘n’ bass scene.

Keith began DJing by the early 1980s and followed English beat-freaks through soulhip-hop and rare-groove, until the acid-house and hardcore explosion of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Throughout these decades, he remained a stalwart figure of the UK breakbeat scene. After a remix of Orbital’s “Chime,” he moved into production with apparent ease, to become a respected drum ‘n’ bass label-head.

By the middle of the 1990s, Keith had established a reputation as one of the most inspired drum ‘n’ bass DJs and remixers of all time. His own productions, including the jump-up anthem “Terrorist,” began taking centre stage and Keith formed three separate labels – Penny Black, Dread and UFO – in 1996.

Keith has worked in close association with Gavin Cheung (aka Nookie). He released the Penny Black collection Breakage, Vol. 1 in 1997, followed by his solo debut, 1999’s “UFO Presents Contact”.

Did you know, if the above DJ is Open-Format (see the Music Styles box), they will also be able to put together mixes like the ones on our demos page here.
