Norman Cowans (DJ Flash)

Norman Cowans (aka DJ Flash), the first man of African/West Indian descent to bowl for the England cricket team was a trailblazer in the new era of fast bowling to emanate the might of the prolific West Indian attack.

Norman had a distinguished first class county cricket career with Middlesex and Hampshire, winning three county championships and four limited over titles.

Perhaps his greatest moment, however, was during the 1982 Ashes Test series in Australia. Norman’s impressive bowling figures of 6 for 77 in the second innings of the third test in front of 80,000 partisan Aussies at the MCG in Melbourne, resulted in a nail-biting 3 run victory, helping England to retain the Ashes.

Norman was nicknamed ‘Flash’ as a result of being able to bowl a cricket ball at almost 100 mph, this was the source of his performing name DJ Flash.

Norman has a love of soul and reggae music from his Jamaican roots and spins his tunes with the same ferocity as his deliveries to trembling batsmen on a fast wicket. His favourite artists include Otis Redding, James Brown, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Maxi Priest, Denis Brown, Mary J Blige and David Bowie.

Norman’s infectious personality and natural wit, along with his amusing anecdotes will energise any event you will have the pleasure to attend.

Did you know, if the above DJ is Open-Format (see the Music Styles box), they will also be able to put together mixes like the ones on our demos page here.
